Group Says Digital Watermarks Will Identify Copyright Owners and Curb Infringers

"The entertainment sector is America's number one export industry," contributing over $625 billion to the U.S. economy each year, Rep. Diane E. Watson (D-Calif.) said. However, Watson, who is chair of the caucus, cautioned that "copyright pirates are expected to steal $6 billion a year," from authors and creators in the U.S. market alone. Thus, we need strong technologies that are better able to stop, or at the very least, stall pirates, she said, adding that one such technology already exists in the market: digital watermarks.
